• The sloop Clearwater on the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie. Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit, member- supported corporation whose mission is to preserve and protect the Hudson River. As an organization, Clearwater believes its innovative environmental programs, advocacy and celebrations will continue to inspire and energize the next generation of environmental leaders.

Pete w banjoIn 1966, folk music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, announced plans to “build a boat to save the river.” At the time, the Hudson was rank with raw sewage, toxic chemicals and oil pollution; fish had disappeared over many miles of its length. Seeger believed a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river, where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it.

Inspired by that vision, the 106-feet-long sloop Clearwater was built and launched in 1969. The sloop was among the first vessels in the U.S. to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, virtually creating the template by which such programs are conducted around the world today.

Since the launch of the Clearwater, more than half a million young people and hundreds of thousands of adults have experienced their first real look at an estuary’s ecosystem—fish, invertebrates, water chemistry and ecological principals—aboard the sloop. Clearwater’s environmental education programs now serve more than 15,000 students annually, and the organization also educates over 200 teachers each year through SUNY New Paltz, Pace University and other institutions. Clearwater’s members have helped advocate for the Clean Water Act, the Hudson River Park Act and removal of PCB’s from the Hudson.
• From the artist, Scott Barrow:

I love typewriters.
They are mechanical wonders that when used to their fullest potential seem as if they
might fly apart at any moment.
They are Noisy, percussive yet elegant and responsive.
They are a tactile and immediate connection to our thoughts and feelings as we put
them to paper.
Computer keyboards serve the same purpose, but they keep us at a distance.
When your fingers dance across the keys of a Remington, a Royal or an Underwood
you are at one with the machine and that physical contact locks in the emotions of your
words.
Typewriters are collection points. They embrace our energy, our joy and our fears and
become wiser with every correspondence.
When I first saw this machine with the Hebrew keyboard I was smitten. It was foreign,
yet familiar. The British Pound symbol “£” implies that it was in Palestine when the
British were there.
I wonder,
was this typewriter owned by a diplomat corresponding with a contemporary in London,
by a journalist reporting to their editor
maybe just someone like you or me writing home to family or a distant lover?
I wonder. Barrow
“Dear Moshe,”

Evidently, typewriters are also very good at keeping secrets.

 • Illustrated by Lynd Ward, this tale of the friendship between the tiny beacon and the George Washington Bridge introduced children around the world to the red, round, and very, very proud little lighthouse in New York...Built in 1880, the 40-foot tower was moved in 1921 to Jeffrey’s Hook, a rocky point on the Hudson River near Manhattan’s northern edge. The Lighthouse warned ships away from the shore as they made their way down the narrow channel between New York and New Jersey...However, when construction of the George Washington Bridge was completed in 1931, the brilliant lights of the bridge’s 600-foot towers overwhelmed the little Lighthouse. In 1947, it was officially decommissioned and abandoned, and by 1951, the Little Red Lighthouse was slated for demolition – its cast-iron shell to be sold for scrap...Hearing this news, thousands of children who had loved Swift’s book started a nationwide campaign to save the Little Red Lighthouse. Thanks in part to their efforts, ownership of the Lighthouse was transferred from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation...Today, visitors climb a long, iron stair to the top of the tower, where the lantern room is again fitted with a working lens that blinks proudly at cargo barges and passenger ships sailing under the George Washington Bridge...The Little Red Lighthouse is owned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and is a member of the Historic House Trust.
